super intelligence

Definition of super intelligence
-
: (US government usage) the official name, since 2026, that US federal agencies use for what is otherwise called artificial intelligence: computer systems that understand language, recognize images, make decisions, and perform similar tasks
- Under the new order, federal reports are supposed to say 'SI' wherever they used to say 'AI'.
- A contractor's proposal to the agency called its chatbot an SI system, while its own website still said AI.
-
: (less often) a short form of superintelligence: hypothetical AI far more capable than humans in almost every area
- Some writers use SI as shorthand for superintelligence, which makes the new government usage easy to misread.
Origin & history
Made official by a US executive order signed on September 29, 2026, which directs federal agencies to use 'Super Intelligence' and 'SI' instead of 'artificial intelligence' and 'AI' in official documents and communications, and asks the White House science adviser to draft a federal definition. The administration said the new name better reflects what the technology can do.
