AI for science was already an established research-policy label by 2020, when the US Department of Energy published an AI for Science report following 2019 town halls at national laboratories. A 2023 cross-disciplinary agenda helped define it as a field connecting AI researchers with scientists in other domains. In October 2026, the 17-country Kyoto Vision for a Golden Age of Science called for integrating advanced AI into scientific workflows and autonomous, closed-loop discovery.
