: a fast, low-cost AI model that reads text or code and returns a choice, score, or probability from a fixed set of options, instead of writing free-form text
- We replaced the chatbot in our ticket router with a decision model, and each call now takes a fraction of a second.
- A decision model only answers 'approve', 'reject' or 'review', which makes its output easy to plug into code.

The category took off in September 2026 after the startup TypeSafe released Jev; within two weeks OpenAI and Amazon Web Services announced their own decision models, and many open-source versions followed.
