Definition of deep learning

: a type of machine learning that uses neural networks with many layers, allowing a system to learn complex patterns directly from raw data such as text, images, or sound

Applied to machine learning by Rina Dechter in 1986. It took off around 2012, when a deep network trained on GPUs won the ImageNet image-recognition competition by a wide margin.
