defender's window
also defenders' window or AI defender's window
Definition of defender's window
-
: a proposed temporary period in which cyber defenders can use advanced AI to find and fix vulnerabilities faster than comparable AI capabilities spread to attackers
- The security team treated the defender's window as a reason to clear its vulnerability backlog before automated attacks became cheaper.
- Critics questioned how long the defender's window could remain open once capable cyber models were widely available.
Origin & history
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman used The Defender's Window as the title of an August 2026 essay arguing that organizations had a limited opportunity to use AI-assisted security before advanced offensive capabilities became broadly available. By October, independent reporting was already asking whether that window was closing.
