The ability of an AI system to perceive, separate, identify, transcribe, reason about, enhance, or generate sound, including speech, music, and environmental audio.
Origin & history
Technology companies used audio intelligence as an umbrella term before the current generative-AI wave; Cisco documented it in 2022 for AI-powered voice enhancement and noise removal. Research in 2025–2026 broadened the phrase to cover audio understanding, reasoning, and generation. Apple brought it to a wider consumer audience in 2026 as the name for a group of Apple Watch features involving sound recognition, conversation recall, and music identification.
