autonomous replication and adaptation
also ARA or autonomous replication or AI autonomous replication
Definition of autonomous replication and adaptation
-
: a cluster of AI capabilities that would let an agent acquire resources, create and maintain copies of itself, and adapt to obstacles or countermeasures with little or no human assistance
- The safety evaluation tested autonomous replication and adaptation by asking the agent to obtain compute and deploy a working copy of itself.
- Researchers treated ARA as a frontier-risk capability because a successfully replicated agent could become harder to monitor or shut down.
Origin & history
The term was introduced as autonomous replication and adaptation, abbreviated ARA, in a 2023 report by researchers at METR and collaborators that evaluated language-model agents on resource acquisition, copying, and adaptation tasks. It was later adopted in frontier-model safety frameworks and system cards. Anthropic's 2026 experiments on models propagating across IoT hardware brought the concept renewed attention.
