Two meanings, one word
In everyday English
Literacy traditionally means the ability to read and write, and more broadly the knowledge needed to understand a subject.
In AI
The knowledge and skills needed to understand, use, and critically evaluate AI systems, including their capabilities, limits, risks, and effects.
Origin & history
The concept grew from digital and data literacy research and became more prominent as AI entered education and everyday work. Article 4 of the European Union's AI Act requires providers and deployers of AI systems to take measures supporting the AI literacy of staff and other people operating systems on their behalf.
