AI divide
also artificial intelligence divide or global AI divide or AI opportunity divide
Definition of AI divide
-
: the widening gap between people, organizations, or countries that can access, use, build, and influence advanced AI systems and those limited by a lack of computing infrastructure, data, skills, money, connectivity, language support, or decision-making power
- The shortage of data centers and affordable computing capacity could deepen the AI divide between richer and poorer countries.
- Providing an AI tool does not close the AI divide if users lack training, local-language support, or the power to challenge its decisions.
Origin & history
AI divide developed from the older idea of the digital divide as artificial intelligence created new disparities in access, skills, infrastructure, data, and economic opportunity. The term was used prominently in the 2024 United Nations and International Labour Organization report Mind the AI Divide and became increasingly common in policy and development discussions during 2025 and 2026.
