goodput
also ML goodput or AI goodput or ML productivity goodput
Definition of goodput
-
: the rate or proportion of useful machine-learning work completed after time lost to idle resources, scheduling delays, stalls, failures, recovery, or results that miss required service targets is excluded
- The cluster showed high GPU utilization but poor goodput because repeated failures erased hours of training progress.
- The inference team measured request goodput rather than raw throughput so that slow responses outside the latency target did not count as useful capacity.
Two meanings, one word
In everyday English
In computer networking, the rate at which useful application data reaches its destination after protocol overhead and retransmissions are excluded.
In AI

Origin & history
Goodput was first used in computer networking for useful delivered data rather than raw transmitted traffic. Machine-learning infrastructure adopted the term to distinguish productive model training or acceptable inference work from nominal hardware activity. Google researchers formalized ML Productivity Goodput as a fleet-efficiency framework, and cloud and benchmarking systems now use related training and inference goodput metrics.
