Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on July 12, 2024, and entered into force on August 1, 2024. Its provisions apply in stages rather than on a single date.

Usage note

The EU AI Act is a comprehensive legal framework, not a blanket ban or one rule for every AI product. Article 50 applies from August 2, 2026 and includes transparency duties for certain interactive and generative AI systems: users generally must be informed when they are interacting with AI, providers must make covered synthetic outputs machine-readable and detectable where technically feasible, and deployers must disclose deepfakes and some AI-generated public-interest text. The law contains scope limits and exceptions, including for some assistive editing and human-reviewed publications. OpenAI says its EU ChatGPT text uses an invisible statistical watermark called textGrain as one implementation intended to support compliance; the Act itself does not mandate that particular technology.
