Definition of borderless founder
-
: an international entrepreneur who builds a globally ambitious company by combining the customers, talent, reputation, and networks of a home market with the capital, connections, and operating speed of another startup hub, especially Silicon Valley
- The borderless founder hired engineers in her home country while building customer and investor relationships in Silicon Valley.
- AI tools and remote work can help borderless founders coordinate teams and serve customers across several countries from the beginning.
Origin & history
The expression was already used for entrepreneurs building across countries, but it gained a more specific venture-capital meaning in August 2026 when Andreessen Horowitz partners Angela Strange and Gabriel Vasquez described borderless founders as people who turn connections to both their home market and Silicon Valley into a company-building advantage. They argued that AI and remote work were reducing the importance of physical distance between startup ecosystems.
