reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards
also RLVR or reinforcement learning from verifiable rewards
Definition of reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards
-
: a post-training method in which a model learns through reinforcement learning from rewards produced by an automatic checker, such as a correct final answer, passing unit tests, or satisfying a formal constraint
- The lab used reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards because every generated program could be scored by running its test suite.
- RLVR works naturally for mathematics and code, but it is harder to apply when quality depends on taste or an ambiguous human judgment.
Origin & history
The 2024 Tulu 3 report introduced Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards, abbreviated RLVR, as a named post-training method. The term spread rapidly after reasoning-model work showed that automatically checked outcomes in mathematics, coding, and other rule-governed tasks could provide scalable reward signals.
