Origin & history
Hierarchical approaches have long been used in document summarization. In 2025, Anthropic's Safeguards Research Team used hierarchical summarization as a named AI-monitoring technique: it summarized individual computer-use interactions and then summarized the resulting interaction summaries to surface aggregate misuse patterns. Later agent-safety research evaluated the method as a way to monitor long, noisy trajectories.
