Definition of AI-RAN

: the integration of artificial intelligence with a mobile network's radio access network, including using AI to improve radio operations, sharing computing infrastructure between AI and radio workloads, and hosting AI applications at the network edge
- The operator tested whether its AI-RAN infrastructure could run an edge inference service without disrupting mobile traffic.
- The AI-RAN trial used machine learning to improve radio resource allocation during busy periods.

Origin & history

The AI-RAN Alliance, formed in February 2024, organized its work around AI-for-RAN, AI-and-RAN, and AI-on-RAN. Research and industry deployments use these categories to describe different ways AI and radio access networks can work together.
